Reading researcher and author Dr. Mark Seidenberg talks with people working to improve literacy outcomes in the US and other countries. Teachers, school system administrators, activists, parents—and readers!—confront the hard questions about how to address low literacy outcomes, especially among children with other risk factors, such as poverty and development conditions such as dyslexia. Dr. Molly Farry-Thorn joins Mark in these conversations. Molly got her PhD at Washington University in St. Louis and now works with Mark as a postdoctoral researcher. She brings her perspective as a former preschool teacher and researcher of children’s pre-literacy skills. Together with our invited guests, we will focus on a specific topic and discuss how to bridge the gaps between researchers and educators. We want these meetings to be responsive to the needs and wants of our audience and an opportunity for a deeper dive into topics that are complicated and require nuance.
Depending on the availability of our guests some meetings will be prerecorded and others will be held live on zoom calls. The prerecorded meeting videos will be posted here and on YouTube for you to watch whenever you want. The zoom meetings will happen on some Sundays at 3pm Central Time and will be open for anyone to join us. We see these zoom calls as an opportunity for direct communication between all of us who have the goal of improving children’s literacy outcomes. Everyone has helpful ideas to share. This means that in the zoom meetings we will take questions and comments from the audience. There is also a place further down on this page to submit your questions that you would like us to address in future meetings. Don’t worry if you can’t make it to a live meeting, we will be recording them and posting the recordings here and on YouTube.

Hi everyone. We had an interesting discussion last Sunday and thank everyone who participated.
One of our main goals is to involve the audience during the event by taking questions and addressing requests and challenges—giving you opportunities to actively shape the discussion.
We couldn’t do that on Sunday because Molly was dealing with the odious trolls who bombed the call and spammed the chat, while I was continuing the discussion. We apologize for the security lapse. Because we couldn’t address the questions and comments our audience had about the material discussed during the session, Molly and I are going to record a follow-up conversation to be released instead of the recording of Sunday’s meeting.
